Dewet & Samantha | Engagement

As the fire alarm went off they all evacuated the building.

It happened seven days before her birthday, which was seven days before his birthday, which was seven days before Christmas, which was seven days before New Year’s… can you see the pattern here?

Samantha, an Event and Social Media Manager at the Kelvin Grove Country Club was making sure that the fire alarm could be heard from the training room as management had scheduled a fire drill the day before.

A couple of days earlier, De Wet, a Petty Officer in the South African Navy, Maritime Reaction Squadron, returned home from deployment. After being away for more than four months, it took him less than a week to decide that he was to carry out another mission with military tactics and precision – the romantic kind, that is.

With little time to plan, he bought a ring, asked Samantha’s Dad for her hand in marriage and then wrote a letter to the Admiral requesting some help and support from the Navy Fire Department.

The Admiral approved his request on condition that De Wet allow the team to capture the proposal on camera and film. He cleverly contacted the General Manager at Kelvin Grove and arranged that they pretend to have a fire drill at work.

“When I got outside I saw two Navy sailors, one with a camera and one with a video camera and was very confused when a big strong fireman took me by the arm and led me to the fountain.”

“I saw my parents in the corner of my eye and that’s when it happened… the fireman took off his mask and helmet and said ‘baby it’s me’ – got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.”

“I of course said yes!”

“I don’t think it was love at first sight for either of us, partially due to some light-hearted banter exchanged early on in our relationship. But after a few encounters we actually became really good friends and decided to be each other’s +1 whenever we needed to attend social events.”

Protesting that De Wet’s Navy uniform had anything to do with him persuading her to finally say yes, and that she was in fact, more of a firefighter & red truck kind of girl, made her unaware that she had provided him with the perfect cover up.”

While Samantha is dreaming over the perfect kiss to seal the deal, De Wet is looking forward to wearing his wedding band and left the girls in awe with the following comment:

“I just love being with her, I can’t wait to share my life {my everything} with her, because that’s what love is.”
